This body of work is an investigation into the search for physical and emotional comfort. As a person suffering from a chronic pain disorder, physical comfort is something I am always in search of, but can rarely obtain, so I establish objects, spaces, and experiences that are symbolic for the comfort I am seeking. My passion and interest in global and political events that threaten our emotional comfort informs my creation of a world away from the chaos and anxieties of the real world. My work uses images of comfortable objects or spaces, but images are manipulated in a way to take some of that comfort away. Symbolism is an important part of my visual language, specifically through the use of flora and fauna that are local to places where I feel most comfortable and safe. The hand has been a consistent symbol in my work. It originally acted as a symbol for touch, but has now transformed into a self portrait, inserting myself into the narratives I create. The tactility of the work also holds importance as an object or artifact, and is an account of current events, feelings, and locations. I am drawn to fiber arts due to its historical identity as feminine or women’s art and reclaiming that “softness” as an important vessel for my concepts. I am interested in the history of the quilt as a generational object made by women that contains its own history and literal comfort. Fabric has a duality that can exist in the realm of 2D or 3D, but can also live in the in-between as a tactile object like an artist's book. The printmaking process, specifically relief printing, works with my concepts exploring comfort because of the meditative and healing repetition of the creation process.
